Sarah's House : 10-16-2011

Foundation-of-Sarahs-House-is-volunteers-donations

OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- When one Old Town Rotary Club member had the idea to build a Cancer Hospitality Center for cancer patients across Maine, her Rotary Club -- along with volunteers and donors -- answered the call.
The idea came from 26-year-old Rotary Club member Sarah Robinson.
Robinson was receiving treatment for a brain tumor at the Lafayette Cancer Center in Brewer and noticed how many patients traveled hours across the state, and couldn't afford lodging.
That's when she appealed to her Rotary Club for help.
The Old Town Rotary Club has built the foundation of the Thornton House in Old Town on Abbott Street.
The Thornton House is a home to be sold for seed money for a larger project: The Cancer Hospitality Center.
"We're hoping to raise 100 thousand dollars from the sale of the house," said Rotary Club member Dave Wollstadt.
"If we were paying for the labor and materials, that would take up most of the 100 thousand, I would think."
According to Project Manager Stanley Peterson, the Rotary Club has received an estimated $60 thousand in donated supplies.
Both amateur and professional construction workers have been building the Thornton House, all charging the same hourly wage: $0.
Peterson said the Old Town Rotary Club will be working on the Thornton House into the winter, and will need supplies and volunteers as the work continues.
